When two celebrities get together, the tabloids will not leave them alone. When it\u2019s the top celebrity in their respective field, it goes nuclear. It may look like all kisses and puppy love on the outside, but scratch the surface and it looks very different. Maybe even deadly. This week, for the HUNDRETH time, The Beat Marches On to 1st<\/sup> August 2003, the day that actress Marie Trintignant dies, 12 days after being beaten and left in her hotel room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was one of the first \u2018it\u2019 couples in France. One of the most popular actresses in the country and its most popular rock star. Marie Trintignant met Bertrand Cantat while researching a role for her next project. A Janis Joplin biopic. She watched Cantat\u2019s band, Noir D\u00e9sir, perform. According to those who were around the pair, it was love at first sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although everyone could feel the sexual tension in the air, there was a problem with them getting together right away: they were both seeing other people. Both were married with children; in Cantat\u2019s case, he had another on the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their attraction was so strong, however, that they started seeing each other behind the backs of their partners. Eventually they did break up with their current partners to be together, Cantat allegedly leaving his wife, Kristina Rady, just after she had given birth to their second child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The couple were together for about a year when Trintignant had to travel to Vilnius, Lithuania, for a movie shoot. Cantat wasn\u2019t there at first but did join at a later date. After he arrived, the cast and crew noticed a change in their lead actress. Marie would only come out of her trailer when necessary, whereas before she was interacting with the rest of the people on set all day. It felt to the crew that she was being kept away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One night they were getting ready to go to a function hosted by an assistant director, where Trintignant received a text from her ex-husband. Cantat saw the text, which he considered flirty and flew into a jealous rage. The couple fought but still tried to act civil at the gathering, but the attendees knew that something had gone on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the party, a crew member walked them back to their hotel to try to help settle their differences. He felt that by the time they got back to the hotel, it had been settled and left them to spend the night together. It turned out that Cantat could not let it go, and the argument got aggressive again. This time, to dire consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marie\u2019s brother, Vincent, received a phone call that night from Cantat, asking him to come over, and it was urgent. When he arrived at the hotel room, he realised something bad had happened, and called the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story, according to Cantat, is that Marie started pushing him and he reacted. The singer overreacted, and she hit her head on a radiator when he pushed back. He panicked when his partner wouldn\u2019t wake up and placed her in the bed. Trintignant was alive for now but was comatose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time everyone believed Bertrand\u2019s story, there wasn\u2019t any reason not to. At this point, he was the only witness to what happened. The other person involved was fighting for her life. Once news got out of what happened, this became France’s biggest story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As soon as Trintignant arrived at the hospital, she was put into a coma. It became pretty obvious quickly that the actress wasn\u2019t going to wake up. The family decided to transport her to a French hospital, against the wishes of the Lithuanian doctors. On August 1st,<\/sup> Marie Trintignant had died, officially of swelling on the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the autopsy report was released, the police noticed there were some anomalies with Cantat\u2019s story. It wasn\u2019t one blow to the head when she fell; it was much worse than that. It stated that there were 15-20 blows to the head alone. A broken nose, bruises over her body and cranial trauma. It was like she went head-to-head with a heavyweight boxer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reacting to the report, the police, which was a joint French and Lithuanian investigation, arrested Cantat. Charged with murder with indirect intent, the singer admitted that he did slap his girlfriend, unlike before, when he insisted that he only pushed her. The interview was recorded, and when Bertrand came to terms with the realisation of what he did, he started to break down and cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the trial, Cantat\u2019s defence strategy was to use the crime of passion law, which still applies in Lithuanian law to this day. It basically means that you\u2019re less in control due to your emotions, and often are given a reduced sentence, as there was no doubt he did kill her; the decision was whether he intended to or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trintignant\u2019s family was there for every day of the trial in support of her, as were the members of Noir D\u00e9sir to support Cantat, as well as Kristina Rady, the ex-wife. She took the stand as a character witness in support of her former husband. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trial only lasted three days. Cantat was found guilty of Manslaughter committed with indirect intent and was sentenced to eight years in prison. Both the prosecution and the defence appealed the decision initially but dropped it at a later date. After six months, the singer was moved from a prison in Lithuania to a prison in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After just four years in prison, half of his sentence, Cantat was released on good behaviour. Trintignant\u2019s family were upset about the decision, but there was nothing they could do, despite going right to the top French President, Nicolas Sarkozy. The singer went straight back to Noir D\u00e9sir and lived the rest of his life as if nothing had happened. The band even released a new album and won an award while he was incarcerated. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is where, in most circumstances, the story will end: the protagonist of the story would try to get on with his life and forget about his atrocities. Not with Bertrand, though; he wasn\u2019t quite done yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Cantat was released from prison, he went to live with his ex-wife. The couple didn\u2019t get back together romantically, but they did it for the kids. Or so Rady thought. Kristina found out the hard way when she started dating again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cantat went back to his controlling ways, just like before. Rady left messages to her parents explaining how trapped she was and might be in trouble. There was only one way out for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 10th<\/sup> 2010, Rady committed suicide. She was discovered by her 13-year-old son while Cantat was dozing on the couch. There was a brief look into whether she was driven to it by her former husband, but no charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suicide drew the line for Noir D\u00e9sir, who split after they found out about Rady. Cantat tried a solo career, but it didn\u2019t take off after many performances were cancelled due to protests outside the venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An article by journalist Anne-Sophie Jahn exposed the truth about Cantat. It revealed that the abuse had been there from the start of the couple\u2019s relationship. Outed by an ex-bandmate, it wasn\u2019t just Rady who was attacked; there were others. As well as leaked medical records about how much he had beaten his estranged wife while under parole. If the authorities found out about it, then he would have gone back to prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, Cantat denied the allegations, even tried to sue Jahn; however, the law sided with the journalist. The article was produced around the same time as the Harvey Weinstein allegations, which helped it gain traction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jahn\u2019s research led to a Netflix documentary released in 2025, which was one of the primary sources used in research for this article. After the film\u2019s release, it led to an enquiry to look at Rady\u2019s suicide. It\u2019s currently still ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
